Economic Development comes with a cost.

The City of Amarillo has seen an increase in economic development and tourism expenditures, going from $2 million in 2022 to $4 million in 2023.

Amarillo officials say the main source of money comes from a higher rate of travelers staying in local hotels.

The expenditures go to several different missions like urban housing, entertainment, tourism expansion, and the visitors bureau here in Amarillo.

City officials say this helps to curb taxpayer costs by bringing in money from visitors, which in return boosts the local economy.
